Cold Days and Making Soup with Kids

Hello from Karen Whiting! Soup warms us on cold days. The cold seems to linger in winter and on rainy spring and autumn days. Chilly days are a good time to read about stone soup and make your own pot of soup or stew. Talk about European folklore that included a hungry stranger coming to town with just a little stone that was the basis of the book. No one wanted to share food but the strenger used a pot, water, and a stone to make villagers think he was cooking the best soup ever and that he would share it. He’d mention how one other ingredient would make it even better and someone would get that for him until the pot filled with lot of tast and flavor that few the neighbors. Each mentioned ingredient added to the pot made the soup better.
Take out a pot and fill it halfway with water. Discuss safety around the stove. Then start adding ingredients kids like salt, pepper, and potatoes. Let them help peel and cut the veggies, adding carrots, potatoes, and green onions. See what else is in the frig or pantry as you make you own soup. Add salt and spices too. Let it simmer for a few hours to fill the air with a great aroma and let the steam add warmth to the house.
Adding our own part develops a sense of belonging. While the soup simmers, play some games, especially ones where you add on to something, like creating a design with dominoes, build a tower of blocks, or do an alphabet game whre each person adds a word with the next letter after repeating all that has been said.
Then enjoy a prayer circle where each person adds a praise or prayer. Think of reasons to rejoice and people who need prayer for a job, healing, or struggle. Talk about how more people praying helps a person feel noticed and cared for plus God likes us to pray for others. Read Matthew 18:19-20.
Take a few photos of hunting, chopping, and cooking as well as eating the soup to save the memory.
