“Some Children See Him”
Two new babies joined our family this fall, little boy cousins born two months apart. And this Christmastime I can’t help but look at them and think about Mary’s baby boy–Jesus, the Son of God.
When Bethlehem’s shepherds found a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger, just as the angel had told them, they knew they were looking at their deliverer–even if they didn’t fully understand who he was.
What do you see when you look at baby Jesus?
I don’t remember when I first came to love the song “Some Children See Him,” with its focus on the baby all children see as someone like themselves.
I know it was sometime before my daughter Sheila was in seventh or eighth grade. That’s the year she surprised me by by singing it for everyone at a Girl Scout mother-and-daughter Christmas spaghetti dinner.
Yes, Jesus was Jewish. He didn’t LOOK Asian or African or European. But he WAS a baby born for everyone.
And, as the song says, whoever and wherever we are, when we see Jesus, we’re looking at love.
Thanks to my son-in-law for putting together the video, and to my daughter for the vocals. I love you.
