Books for Teaching Children about Money
My last post looked at the possibility of our children graduating from college debt free. (I know it sounds like an impossibility, but it’s not.)
With the back-to-school displays going up and reading about the increasing costs of school supplies and other back-to-school necessities, I’m guessing money is a subject on many minds right now.
So when I found “The Best Children’s Books for Money Lessons” on the US News & World Report website this week, I really wanted to share it with you. It’s an excellent article that contains a list of 15 picture books, chapter books, and middle grade novels that can help parents talk to kids about money. Although these aren’t Christian books, they definitely can open up conversations about biblical money principles.
And here’s one more book to add to the list. It’s out of print but available both new and used from resellers on amazon.com. There’s something terribly wrong with the cover image on amazon; the kids on the cover are not purple!
Just like the subtitle says, this is a children’s guide to saving, spending, and giving, all based on the biblical principles taught by Larry Burkett and Crown Financial Ministries.
To make the teaching concrete, throughout the book are slots where kids can add pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. When all the slots are filled, they will have saved more than $20!
“God gives us good gifts and wants us to know
How where, and when our money should go.
First you earn money one cent at a time,
Then you give, save, or spend each penny, quarter, nickel, and dime.”
I hope you’ll enjoy discovering some of the books available to help you teach your children (and maybe remind yourself) about what the Bible says about money and especially Jesus’ teaching about keeping our treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:20-21).
