10 Things the Bible Says about Itself
Some days, we’re just dry. Empty. Deeply cracked and chipped. On those days, it’s tough to find something worthwhile to write about, something useful that might help or bless someone else.
On those days, it’s good to know there’s a place to go. To God, to His Word.
Here are 10 things the Bible says about itself. Reposted from dianestortz.com in November 2012, because today for me is one of those dry days . . .
God’s Word …
1. … gives us hope.
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.—Romans 15:4
2. … shows us Christ.
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.—John 5:39
From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.—2 Timothy 3:15
3. … makes us wise.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.—2 Timothy 3:16-17
For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.—Proverbs 2:6
4. … is good news.
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.—1 Peter 1:25
5. … makes disciples.
And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.—Acts 6:7
6. … works in us.
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.—1 Thessalonians 2:13
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.—Hebrews 4:12
7. … helps us pray.
In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, … for all the saints.—Ephesians 6:16-18
8. … is true.
This God— his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.—Psalm 18:30
9. … can’t be stopped.
I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!—1 Timothy 2:9
10. … lasts forever.
All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.—1 Peter 1:24-25
Which of these characteristics of God’s Word means the most to you today?
