Let’s go to a Book Launch!
I love book launches!
As an author I understand the sometimes tricky road to publication and know that a book in print is something worth celebrating. When I launch my own books I think of it as an excuse to throw a book themed party! You can see some more pictures of another book launch of mine by following this link.
But I also love book launches as a parent. My youngest child is 4 years old and we’ve taken to attending the occasional book launch as a special outing. It’s usually a fun morning’s activity (book launches for picture books are often held during the day when mums and kids can attend) and is always a little different depending on the author’s personality.Attending book launches allows us to share a common interest. We get to listen to a brand new story, think about what is involved in the creation of a book and usually walk away with a new addition to our library. Attending book launches also allows us to celebrate the very act of reading which, for a young child, is a value best learnt through exposure and experience. It’s a great way to boost an appreciation for literacy.
Here are some pictures from two recent launches we attended:
Little Meerkat is a fun picture book about not growing up too fast and the importance of family. The launch included some fun meerkat information, story time and a competition. We were able to buy a couple of presents and ask the author, Aleesah Darlison, to sign a copy for my son’s preschool too!
When I See Grandma is a beautiful picture book about loving (and farwelling) a beloved grandparent. This launch was held in a local library. Author Debra Tidball engaged with the children confidently as she read her story, while all us adults were getting tears in our eyes.
What was the last book launch you attended?
Who did you take with you?
