Bible Story Resource Roundup-Jesus Walks on Water
The story of Jesus walking on the water is one of my favorite stories in the Gospels because to me, it illustrates Jesus’ gentleness and incredible patience with His children. Three times in the NIV version of the story, the word “immediately” is used to describe His actions:
- “Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.” (v. 22)
- “But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’” (v. 27)
- “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’” (v. 31)
The disciples had literally just witnessed the miraculous feeding of over 5,000 people. With one prayer, Jesus multiplied what they had until it was more than enough to meet the need. But the minute they saw something out in the water, they panicked. They forgot that Jesus was still in control. He immediately calmed their fears.
The first time the word “immediately” appears, He was sending them out of a situation they weren’t ready for—a crowd who wanted to make Him king by force. The second and third times, He was patiently quieting their fears. Their fears were foolish, but they were human. They were scared, and Jesus acted immediately. That always comforts me. He didn’t let Peter splash around and choke for a few minutes to get his attention. He didn’t wait for the disciples to figure out what was going on. He came and took control. Not a day goes by when I don’t need Him to do the same.
There are many fun ways you can teach this story to little ones (though be sure they understand that walking on water is something very special that they should never ever do!). Here are some fun ideas, games, printables, and even a snack I found to make it a little easier.
