12 Days of Christmas Books: Featuring ‘Twas the Evening of Christmas by Glenys Nellist
‘Twas the evening of Christmas, when all through the town,
Every inn was so crowded, no room could be found.
For over 200 years families have gathered to hear the much-loved words of Clement C Moore’s The Night Before Christmas. This year, families can gather to hear the real Christmas story.. the story of Jesus’ birth. Twas the Evening of Christmas, a premium picture book, is written in the same rhythm and style of Clement C Moore’s classic, but focuses on Jesus, rather than Santa, who is, after all, the true hero of Christmas.

Written for children aged 4-10, and a finalist in the 2018 ECPA Book Awards,Twas the Evening of Christmas is a wonderful read-aloud for families to share around the Christmas tree. Publishers Weekly reviewed it this way:
In a skillfully composed text that mimics the phrasing and cadence of Clement C. Moore’s familiar holiday poem, Nellist presents a Nativity story that balances a lighthearted, anticipatory tone with an overarching reverence for the subject matter….
But it’s the reviews from these ordinary readers that I love!

I love rhyming books and write in rhyme so this would probably serve me as a great mentor text as well as my 4 year old granddaughter who loves to rhyme words (I’m certain she’ll be an early reader!) She’ll be picking out the rhyming words all the way through…as well as hearing a great story!
Hi Karen, one of my favorite things to do when I read to children is to leave words off the end of some lines and let them fill in the missing rhymes. It’s so fun!
