Getting God’s Word into Young Hearts, Little by Little
Sharing faith with young children, teaching them God’s Word, helping them experience His truth and His presence . . . it’s a huge task, right?
And you’ve probably had days when the task seemed too big to accomplish.
Days when your child just can’t sit still. Cold winter days when you’ve been cooped up inside for too long.
Busy days when
every child has an after-school activity in a different direction.
Sick days when the dishes and laundry pile up and you’re exhausted.
Days when doing “family devotions” could not be further from your mind.
How do you accomplish your goals for your children’s faith development on days like these?
A lesson I learned last year
For most of last year, I sat at my desk working on a new book for women, a 365-day devotional through the Bible . . . and a book like that takes a LONG time to write! Many days I honestly didn’t know how I could possibly see the project through to the end.
But with God’s help, I got it done. (The book becomes available this fall, September 2019.)
Devotion by devotion, day by day, the numbers began to add up. And when I think back over how the book developed, I see a clear lesson:
Perseverance over a period of time pays off. Commitment and effort add up, especially if they’re held together by faith and trust in God.
“Devotions” with young children don’t have to happen all at once! Devotions for a busy family can mean
* a Bible story before bed, or a Bible story at breakfast,
* a question to talk about while driving to soccer practice later the next day,
* an easy activity or craft based on the story while you wait for dinner to finish cooking, or a song to sing in the bathtub,
* a Bible verse to repeat together throughout the week—on a walk to the playground, before you eat, or as you’re packing lunches for the next day.
Just bring Jesus into whatever you are doing, and keep on doing that day after day. Commit your efforts to God and trust Him for the results. Persevere, and you will reach your goal of instilling God’s Word in the hearts of your children!
No matter how big the task seems, don’t be intimidated. Plan, begin, and persevere. With God’s help, you can do it!
Need a tool to help you with the task? Check out my new book, Stop-and-Go Devotional: 52 Devotions for Busy Families. Each devotion features a short, active Bible story, questions to think and talk about, a simple, fun activity, a Bible verse, and a prayer. If you use the elements of one devotion at different times throughout one week, you’ll have enough devotional material to last all year!
