Good Night, Fireflies by Janet L. Christensen, il. by Francesca Pesci is a delightful children’s story about how fireflies help an anxious boy overcome his fear of the spookies and creepies at bedtime. I felt Landon’s mounting fear as his bedtime approached and each attempted delay was dealt with. But his fears got the best of him after the lights went out. Landon’s father used fireflies in a surprising way to teach him about God’s faithful presence in our lives, and Landon was able to return to his room and trust God, even in the dark.
Soft, restful, and colorful describe Francesca Pesci’s illustrations that will surely capture children’s imaginations as they read or listen to this story. They surely brought back memories of catching fireflies as a child and with my daughter and grandchildren.
What I liked best about this book: The natural and believable buildup of the story and the imaginative approach to calming Landon’s fears. I also liked that they released the fireflies before returning into the house.
What I liked least: I looked hard, but couldn’t find anything not to like about this book.
I received a copy of Good Night Fireflies from the publisher through the BookCrash review program. This review contains my honest opinions, which I have not been compensated for in any way.
