The Lord’s Prayer—Make it your own
Has the Lord’s Prayer become so familiar to you that your mind can be 1,000 miles away as you recite it? Try using it as a model for creating your own prayer. This may well be how Jesus intended for it to be used when he taught his disciples to pray.
How might you put this first concept into a prayer using your own words?
Here is one example: Oh Father God in heaven you are so holy. Your very name is holy and deserves all our honor and praise.
We eagerly await the arrival of your great Kingdom and your holy presence everywhere. Come quickly please, Jesus.
We desperately need to understand your will, Lord God. Help us to put our personal plans and goals aside to do your will and yours alone. Help us to realign whatever plans we might have according to your Word. Help us to better understand your will by spending more time in the Bible every day as we seek your wisdom and guidance.
We eagerly await the day when your will alone will predominate the lives of all the people on earth. That is when we will experience true peace and harmony.
Give us food and necessities we need day by day. Help us to be content with, and thankful for, your provisions. Help us not to worry about tomorrow.
Forgive us for the many ways we fail you. Give us eyes to recognize our sins so hidden sins don’t get in the way of our enjoying a rich relationship with you. Give us a forgiving spirit so we may freely forgive those who sin against us as we remember the price you paid to forgive us our sins.
Give us eyes to recognize temptation for what it is and the desire to flee from it. Give us the courage to stand against evil without falling into temptation, and show us the way of escape.
For your great Kingdom is the only Kingdom that has all the power and glory. Your Kingdom is forever and ever and will never be defeated. Praise God! Amen and amen!
Did you make this prayer your own? If you only read this post, you missed my point. I encourage you to go back through and pray your own prayers using your own words. Use the pictures to help you focus on the concepts Jesus was teaching his disciples. If we want to truly commune with God in prayer, we need to pray often using our own words. Jesus gave us this great example to follow in our prayers. Give it a try.
Share this with your family as a new way to pray together. Give everyone a chance to contribute at each step along the way.
