Small Hands in a Big World
One of my favorite things to do with children is help them to create handprint art. There are so many possibilities in the handprints of little ones and each piece records a time and place in their lives.
My other favorite thing is to share the creation story with small friends, so I was thrilled to find a recently published book that beautifully tells the creation story through handprints, I knew that I had a found a perfect book filled with possibilities.
MY HANDS MAKE THE WORLD
By Amalia Hoffman author and illustrator
Board book for preschool – kindergarten
PJ Library:2022
The story begins-
In the beginning…
The creation story is told with lyrical text and brilliant colors detailing the creation story as God made the world. From darkness to light to a day of rest, this book engages children and helps them to understand the wonder of God’s creation. Children follow two handprints amidst swooshes and fingerprints of paint from beginning to satisfying ending. This joy-filled book makes a perfect gift when paired with paper and paint.
After you read MY HANDS MAKE THE WORLD, open and read the beginning of the book of Genesis. Then get out paper and paint and let children use their imaginations and creativity to illustrate their favorite things that God created.

And to continue with the handprint theme, pair this book with
26 BIG THINGS SMALL HANDS DO
By Coleen Paratore (author) and Mike Reed (illustrator)
Free Spirit Press:2008
Picture book for ages 2-6
From A to Z, this book celebrates the things children can do to help, encourage, and make the world a better place. They can Applaud, Explore, Give, and Sign. I have shared this with many children as a kindergarten teacher and have seen how they enjoy discussing and doing many of the things shown in the book. I appreciate the diverse group of children represented so that children can see themselves and their friends represented on the pages. A great idea is to create your own alphabet book featuring your class or family in action using their hands. Add this one to your alphabet book collection!
