Baking with Kids
Let’s cook with kids from Karen Whiting
Taking a warm tray of muffins out of the oven fills a room with a wonderful aroma. It’s fun and good training to bake with kids. They appreciate the food once they make it and it build life skills.
After baking, sit and share fresh the bread. Relax and enjoy the time together. Bake and break bread together. It often opens up hearts and conversations. Try an evening with several types of bread and discuss all the many varieties.

Try Non-dairy Blueberry Muffins
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 up oil
1 cup sugar. 2 eggs beaten
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 pint (1 1/4 cup of berries
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Directions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Mix together flour, sugar, salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat together the oil and eggs.
- Mix the dry and liquid ingredients together.
- Stir in blueberries.
- Pour into muffin tins (makes 12 large muffins)
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Thanksgiving is coming and children can help make quick apple turnovers in place of an apple pie.
What you need
- Apples (or cherries if you prefer)
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Butter
- Crescent rolls
What to do
Peel, core, and chop a few apples. Sprinkle in a spoonful of sugar and a little cinnamon. Microwave the apples for 2 to 3 minutes, until soft. Drain the excess liquid.You have some great apple filling! Open up a container of refrigerated crescent rolls. Put some apple filling in the center. Then lift each corner of dough and place across the apple filling to make a turnover. Place them on a cookie sheet. Use a pastry brush to brush a little butter on the dough and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes, until brown. Let cool.
Remember to pause and say a blessing over the food. Then enjoy eating together and sharing conversation.
