Love-Themed Activities Based on Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney
Guess How Much I Love You You will love this proven winner picture book by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram.
Little Nut Brown Hare and his mom are trying to describe their love to one another and it seems like a very difficult thing to measure!
I received this book as a baby shower gift and even read it to my babies before they were born! I also borrowed one of the phrases “I love you to the moon and back,” and I would say that special phase to each child when I tucked them in before bed.
The illustrations are darling and the book really captures the love that exists between a parent and a child. You can even order Little Nut Brown Hare stuffed animals!
Here are several ways to use this book as a springboard to connection time with your child.
Idea #1 Affirmation Activity
Everyone has a different love language. One way to express love is through words of affirmation in a note. Spend time with your children preparing love notes for each member of the family. You can color a picture, make construction paper hearts, or use actual cards. If your children are older, have them write the message themselves. For younger children, help them write down what they want to say. In your letters to them, take the opportunity to affirm them! Opening the letters and reading them aloud is a wonderful experience and a great way to build a loving environment in your home.
Idea #2 Learn about literary devices
Simile: Comparison using like or as
Metaphor: Comparison that does not use like or as
Hyperbole: Exaggerated statements that are not meant to be taken literally
In the book you will find the author comparing the size of his love as across the river and over the hills, right up to the moon, right up to the moon and back.
Can you and your child think of some metaphors, similes, and hyperboles to describe situations like…
How hungry you are, How thirsty you are, How tired you are, How happy you are, How impatient you are?
Have fun giggling at the outrageous things you think up!
