Literary Devotional Series Recommendation: The Little Women Devotional and The Anne of Green Gables Devotional
If you want a solid devotional book series with a literary flair, look no further. Rachel Dodge’s chapter-by-chapter devotionals, paired with favorite childhood books, will be great additions to your bookshelf!
I am always on the search for inspirational, yet biblically sound devotional books, and I just happened to stumble upon one of Rachel’s books, The Little Women Devotional, in a gift shop in the North Georgia mountains. I absolutely loved the format and themes of ‘faith, family, contentment, wisdom, and joy’ that went along with stories of the lives of the March sisters in the book, Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott. I was hooked!
Unsurprisingly, I was delighted to discover that Rachel had also written other similar devotionals, and I immediately ordered The Anne of Green Gables Devotional: A Chapter-By-Chapter Companion for Kindred Spirits. I was not disappointed with this 40-day devotional with entries for every chapter of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Per Rachel’s design, the reader can read a chapter of the novel—then read the corresponding devotional entry, thereby going through the book chapter by chapter. Win-win!
Each beautiful volume includes corresponding Bible verses, original artwork throughout, and life application/discussion questions that can be geared toward groups, book clubs, or an individual or family study. I especially like the addition of sections at the end of each day’s devotion entitled Personal Application and Prayer for Today.
My next purchases will be The Secret Garden Devotional and Praying with Jane: 31 Days Through the Prayers of Jane Austen—and I can hardly wait to spend my ‘Quiet Time’ in the mornings diving into the devotions based on the books of two more of my favorite authors, Frances Hodgson Burnett and Jane Austen. I only wish I’d had these devotionals when my children were younger, as we read through all the childhood classics together. However, I know exactly what I will be using with my future grandchildren!
If like me, you have a special place in your heart for beloved childhood classics, you will find these books to be inspirational, enjoyable, and relevant. They would also be wonderful to share with your entire family as you read through the featured literary favorites together. I wholeheartedly recommend this devotional series by Rachel Dodge.

This sounds so amazing! Books can speak to us on so many levels. How impactful it can be to read with a filter of God’s truth always before us, knowing God, who can reveal himself in a myriad of ways, may choose a book to do so. Thank you, Amy, for bringing this to my attention!
Thanks, Karen. Yes–that is absolutely true. I was definitely excited to find and share these books.
