Little Prayers for Ordinary Days
I am pleased to review Little Prayers for Ordinary Days, a sweet book of prayers for kids ages 4-8, published by IVP Kids (InterVarsity Press). In this book, three gifted authors—Katy Bowser Hutson, Flo Paris Oakes, and Tish Harrison Warren— team up with talented illustrator, Liita Forsyth, to offer a collection of delightful prayers for children to pray throughout the day. From waking up in the morning to going to bed at night, and everything in between, these conversational prayers will help children talk to God with ease.
Coauthor Katy Bowser explains the purpose for their book of little prayers: For children (and all of us), it’s sometimes hard to put into words the things that we’re experiencing. We want to help give voice and words to everyday moments, to model for children (and those who love them) that we can talk to God about absolutely everything.
From the moment we wake up in the morning until we go back to bed at night, every day is filled with ordinary moments that allow us to connect with God.
This collection of prayers teaches children to pray throughout their day to help them recognize the nearness of God and experience His presence. Some of the prayers included in the book are: For waking up; For the start of the school day; At the end of the school day; For reading a book; For trying something new; For rest time; For play time; For waiting; For a hard day; For a really great day.
I love how conversational the prayers are and how they help children realize they can talk to God about anything and express what’s in their hearts and minds. For example:
For When I Make Something
God, I love to make things!
When I paint, when I draw,
when I write, when I build,
when I dance, when I cook,
when I dig.
I am acting like you!
You love to make good things.
You do it all the time, and you never get tired.
I love that you made me a maker like you—
It gives you joy when I create.
I think you’re amazing.
Along with most of the IVP Kids titles, Little Prayers for Ordinary Days is available to download from NetGalley, or you can order it from their website: Little Prayers for Ordinary Days – InterVarsity Press (ivpress.com)
Here’s to talking to our big God about little things!
