Her Story, Her Strength
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Parker Rubio to talk about her new book Her Story, Her Strength. A nonfiction book for girls that tells interesting stories about women of the Bible.
Sarah, please tell us a little about yourself.
I’ve been an avid reader ever since I convinced my mom to teach me to read before my kindergarten teacher got around to it. Now I am living the dream as a bookish professional, editing children’s and young adult books by day and writing them by night. I was born in the United States, grew up in Costa Rica and Ecuador, and now have a bilingual and bicultural family with my husband, Colombian composer Gary Rubio. We live in Cincinnati with our three wonderful children and two sassy cats.
What inspired you to write Her Story, Her Strength?
This is the Bible storybook I wish I’d had as a girl. When I was growing up, I encountered a lot of Christian books and resources written for girls that focused on beauty—recognizing our God-given inner beauty and cultivating it by seeking a relationship with God and practicing Christian virtues. Which is great—God did make women and girls beautiful! But he also made us strong, and he empowers us to do important things for his kingdom as we reflect his image. I also wanted to explore the stories of biblical women with an eye to what we can learn about God from those stories. God made both men and women in his image—on purpose. Each and every girl has so much value and purpose in God’s eyes, and he is eager to guide, strengthen, and love them. That’s what I hope readers take away from the book.
What makes this book unique?
It contains fifty stories of women mentioned in the Bible, so you will likely find ones that don’t get covered in most Bible storybooks. Each chapter has three sections—Her Story, a narrative that imagines what it was like to go through what she experienced; Her World, which contains historical and cultural information about the place and time she lived in; and Her God, which focuses on what we can learn about God from her story.
Who is your target audience?
Officially, girls ages 8 to 12. But I’ve heard from male and female readers ranging from toddlers to in their nineties who have enjoyed it! I definitely learned a lot as I was writing it!
Please let our readers know how they can learn more about you and your books.
