If you’re like me, you question if you should decide to be something you are not. Most of the time, our decisions only respond to choices and situations put in front of us. However, there is nothing wrong with dreaming of being something that appears beyond our reach. Children do it continually, and we can learn from their hope and faith. After all, God might have placed a dream inside you and wants you to rely on Him for the right time. I dreamed of being a children’s author when I started teaching in the early 1990s. My co-workers and I regularly developed children’s books to use with our students so we could teach objectives that our curriculum should have covered. I was, in my classroom, a children’s author. Then, I wondered if my dream to be published was of God or if I was just being prideful.
As others took notice of my skills, my homemade books began to gain popularity. The public school system I worked for asked to print the books so they could add them to their curriculum. Scholastic Books wanted to talk with me about the project. I thought this was God bringing to fruition my dreams of becoming a children’s author. However, the Scholastic meeting went nowhere, and God began to redirect my teaching career. A few years later, I knew God was asking me to leave the classroom. Consequently, I obeyed and set my books on the top shelf of my closet. I literally shelved the idea and gave up on that dream.
Your Dreams and God’s Path
God seemed to be taking my life in a direction away from becoming the published author I dreamed of. I was now running a fundraising business and using my book writing talents and illustrations in new ways. During those days, I visited a fundraising convention and met people who worked in a traditional publishing house. Impressed by my abilities, they offered me a sales job in their company. I accepted with the notion in the back of my mind that God might use this position as an inroad to publishing my books. The job allowed me to meet famous Christian children’s authors.
Consequently, my dream began to ignite and burn more vigorously than ever. Then, the publishing company restructured and cut my position. My career at a traditional publishing house ended without a book contract. Once again, God seemed to stop the process, and I questioned if my dream would ever be a reality.
The Changes in Publishing
The publishing world was changing, however. Authors were beginning to self-publish books. I considered it for myself because I had gained resourceful skills that would help me be successful. Yet, there was still a lot I didn’t know. I searched for someone who could help and met a woman who had self-published a Christian children’s book. She was willing to help me do the same.
Paying it Forward
I am grateful God never let the dream of being a Christian Children’s author die. Even after that first book was published, my journey has been full of ups and downs, twists and turns. Looking back, I am thankful for each one because God was growing me.

Thank you for sharing your experiences to help others who may have the same dream!
For sure, Crystal. God kept me on the path even when I thought He’d taken me a different direction. He had a lot to teach me along the way.
Thank you for sharing your writing story. I want to learn more about it.
You’re welcome Janice -my own website includes a lot more details and I love sharing the journey because it’s all about God taking me places I would have never ventured on my own.
I wanted to write a children’s book–I had a couple in the works (I love history/genealogy and kids) that were not overtly Christian, but written with a Christian worldview. What I found in traditional publishing in the last 5 years was such a push in the opposite direction– a non-Christian worldview… This was kind of depressing. I attended conferences and workshops and the focus was so much different than my writing. That is one reason why I decided to use a publishing company that helps authors self-publish, and I am very happy with the results of my book, “Mount Battie’s Christmas Star”, (published by Maine Authors Publishing in Thomaston, ME). I got my courage up by doing Christian organizations, like Word Weavers and Christian Writers Conferences, and hiring Christians to edit and illustrate my book.
Yay Laurie! I’m so glad you followed your dream and got help from those wonderful Christian organizations!
Wow! An amazing journey.
