Whose Manger Is This?
My good friend Lisa Robbins has a new release just in time for Christmas that I am excited to feature on today’s CCA blog. In this beautifully illustrated picture book, children will meet an assortment of animal characters— Rowdy Ram, Cranky Cow, and Moody Mule—just to name a few.
The names of these animals might give you a clue as to the tension in the story. It begins with Rowdy Ram who sees a baby in the manger and wonders why the baby is there. “This is my manger,” says Rowdy Ram. “This is my manger,” says cranky cow. “This is my manger, ” says Moody Mule, and all the other selfish stable animals who explain why they need the manger for themselves.
When the animals realize that the baby in the manger is God’s Son who was sent from heaven, their hearts become tender, and they give up their claim to the manger. At the end of the story, each animal brings a gift to Baby Jesus as an act of worship.
Following the story are discussion questions to engage children and bring practical application to the lesson in the story. The final illustration shows the gifts that the animals gave to Jesus with the question: Who gave the gift? I know kids will have fun trying to figure out which animal gave which gift.
With warm and enduring illustrations by Tatiana Kochan, this story reminds readers of all ages that Christmas isn’t about us. Christmas is about the baby who came from His throne in heaven to begin his early life in a borrowed manger.
