Give the Word Plenty of Room in Your Home
Let the Word of Christ – the Message – have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God!
Colossians 3:16 MSG
For many years I have made a point of decorating my home with Scriptures and encouraging words based on Christian teachings. I do this because I believe having God’s Word in front of us is a very effective way to keep our focus where it should be, on our Father. Being reminded of His Truths helps me to keep my mind going in the right direction. It can also be a blessing to friends and family who come to visit. One friend took the time to walk around my house reading every decorative item displaying Bible verses and such. It caught his interest, and he was blessed.
It is something I would encourage everyone to do. We can get so busy that we sometimes lose our focus and gentle reminders help. It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. My collection does include some beautiful Thomas Kincade artwork, but also simple items like a piece of paper printed off the computer that says, “God Wins.” Additionally, there are crosses, coffee mugs, and decorative items from various Christian retailers throughout my home. I have favorite verses printed out and placed in small frames. You get the idea. Be creative and have fun finding ways to put God’s Word in front of everyone in your home every day.
Funny story: A few years ago, I bought several crosses from Hobby Lobby, the kind you hang on the wall. They were of various sizes and styles. I was playing around with how to display them as a grouping. I asked my hubby what he thought. He said it looked like I was selling crosses. So much for that idea!
A fun way to get the kiddos involved is to print out coloring sheets that have Bible verses. A quick google search will lead you to lots of choices. Amazon has many options as well. I searched “Bible Verse Coloring Book for Kids.” Encourage your children to color them in and display them on the fridge, in their rooms, any place they like.
In my book, Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot!, there is a bonus feature entitled, “Speaking God’s Word Makes Those Scary Thoughts Go Away!” It’s toward the end of this book and contains ten verses about overcoming fear with this suggestion, “Bright Idea: Copy these two pages, cut the Bible verses apart and put them up in places where you will see them to help you remember to speak out God’s Word.” Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot! teaches kids about standing up to the “giant of fear” by speaking Scripture out loud.
I hope you are inspired to decorate your home with God’s Word. I believe that just as playing worship music can change the atmosphere and bring our focus back to Him, having visual reminders can do the same.
Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night. Tie them on your hands and foreheads as a reminder; inscribe them on the doorposts of your homes and on your city gates.

Until next time, God bless you!
