Earth Day (April 22) is a reminder that God created a beautiful earth and wants us to help keep it amazing. Try some experiments and plant a tree or new plant.
Gardening Experiments (The secret’s in the soil)
Read the parable of the soils and then try some soil testing experiments. If you don’t have a yard plan on some indoor gardening.
1. Check for rocks and remove them so it won’t be rocky soil.
2. Check the soil acid level. Scoop up two cups of soil. Add ½ cup of vinegar to one. If it bubbles it’s alkaline. Add water to make mud in the other cup. Add in baking soda. If it bubbles, the soil is acidic. Limestone and ash make a soil less acidic. If it’s too alkaline add pine needles, sawdust, or peat moss.
3. Check for worms. Good soil has at least ten worms per square foot of soil.
4. Check the drainage. Dig a one-foot hole and pour water in it. If the water drains in less than an hour it may be too sandy or rocky and needs compost. If it takes more than four hours to drain it may have too much clay and needs compost and sand mixed in.
5. Examine evaporation. After it rains outline a puddle with string or yarn and return t the puzzle several times to watch the water recede in evaporation. Check out how the waters of the flood receded in Genesis 8:1-5.
6. Attract some butterflies and caterpillars. Put out a plate of cut strawberries and parsley. Butterflies like the juice of the fruit and Black Swallowtail caterpillars thrive on parsley. Watch and see if some come to taste.
