Book Review of GOD’S MASTERPIECE

God’s Masterpiece — An Adventure in Discovering Your Worth, written by Elisabeth Hasselbeck, illustrated by Julia Seal, and published by Waterbrook is a delightful new picture book for children ages 2-8 years old. The books opens with scenes of children in a museum observing artwork by famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keefe, Claude Monet, and many others. It then draws the powerful connection to help children understand that they are God’s masterpiece.
With bright and cheerful illustrations, it is written in simple rhyme. I love the page that reads:
“And here is another masterpiece;
It’s priceless, yes, it’s true!
The valuable of valuables,
God’s masterpiece is you!”
The book concludes with a mirror so children can peer into it, see their reflection, and further apply the truth that they have been created by God and are his wonderful masterpiece.
Discuss:
- What was your favorite painting that you saw in the book? Why was it your favorite? (various)
- Who created each person in the world? Who created you just the way you are? (God)
- What are some things about you that are special? (Help your child list many things about himself/herself that are special. Include both physical traits and personality traits)
- Pray with your child and thank God for making them just they way they are.
Do:
Idea One:
One of the page spreads shows kids holding empty frames up to their faces. Why not find a few, fun frames and do a photoshoot with your family. Take turns holding the frames up in front of your face.
Idea Two:
Using markers or crayons, try to imitate the artwork of one of the famous artists in the books. Try to draw flower like Georgia O’Keefe, water lillies like Claude Monet, or A Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. Maybe you can even make an optical illusion like M.C. Escher? Have some fun drawing together!
