Our next stop as we read through the Old Testament and focus on the lives of men and women of God is the book of Judges. It tells the story of many individuals as well as the nation of Israel. More than that, it tells the story of God repeatedly showing mercy to His people when they turned away from Him and defied Him. We can help the preteens and teens in our lives listen closely to what God has to say and learn from the victories and defeats of His people by digging deeper into each part of this book.

This resource focuses on portions of Judges 2-7. It looks at the death of Joshua and his generation, the sins of the people after godly leaders were gone, God’s mercy in providing judges for the people and delivering them time after time, and the rule of Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, and Deborah. It also looks at the call of Gideon, his destruction of his father’s altar to Baal, and his defeat of the Midianites.

The activities encourage kids to slow down and carefully consider the text as they read and answer the questions. It asks them to consider Israel’s pattern of obedience and disobedience. It helps them see that when God calls us to do something, He is the one who makes it happen. It’s His strength, not ours, that wins the victory. He will use us, even if we are scared or hesitant, if we will just obey and trust Him to do what He has said. It also includes activities such as memorizing key verses, completing a word search, summarizing what they have studied, and more.
