South Carolina – Pivotal in the Revolutionary War

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. South Carolina was pivotal to the winning of the war for independence. Each battle was another step in the direction of victory. Every day we are engaged in battles for the minds of our children. Each battle is another stept in the direction of raising a godly generation. Knowledge of the past is a key to winning the battles of today. South Carolina offers several opportunities to learn the history of great and godly men and women whose valiant attempts brought victory for our nation.
Interspersed with the “hands on” activities are many books children can read or have read to them about what they will hear and see as they visit around our great state. Kate Sally Palmer, a native South Carolinian from Orangeburg is the author of Frances Marion, the Legend of the Swamp Fox. The picture book for children first learning American and SC history is filled with accurate illustrations of the men and women of the time. She gives note to not only the colonist but also Native American and African Americans involved in the conflict. Mrs. Palmer has also written. Palmetto-Symbol of Courage and Black Patriots of the American Revolution . All her books are published by Warbranch Press in Central, SC.
Ford the Pacholet by Richard C. Meehan, Jr. is a mid grade novel featuring the people and actions leading up to the Battle of Cowpens. This book also tells of the Native Americans and how they contributed to the success of the war. John Robertson, a former Park Ranger for the Cowpens National Battlefield recommends Meehan’s book by saying, ” The historical accuracy of the fictional tale is definite. I liked switching from my historian role to simply enjoying the excellent story.” Though others along the Eastern Seaboard disagree, we in SC hold the Battle of Cowpens as the turning point of the War.
South Carolina is filled with historical places to visit and learn. Spartanburg City has a statue of General Daniel Morgan on the square. There are trails with explanations at the Cowpens Battlefield. Kings Mountain conducts reenactments as well as a trail that follows the battle there. Walnut Grove Plantation also conducts reenactments in October. This month, Gaffney will conduct an nineteen mile historical bus tour called Voices of the Backcountry 1775. Other places to visit is Musgrove Mill in Spartanburg County. Ninety Six, SC has historical reproductions of the war era. And on and on it goes, throughout the state. SC is a great place not just for a vacation but for a memorable education.
Perhaps your state was involved in the War for Independence. What historical adventures await you in your area?
Blessings for an enjoyable learning adventure. Gail Cartee
