Tonight, let’s finish the story of Gideon and study the stories of Abimelech and Jephthah. These lesser-known stories have much to teach the preteens and teens in our lives. Let’s help them listen closely and learn from these stories recorded in the book of Judges.

This resource focuses on portions of Judges 8-12. It looks at the lives of Gideon, Abimelech, and Jephthah. It shares Israel’s continuous cycle of turning away from God and returning in repentance, God’s unfailing love for His people, the foolishness of Jephthah’s vow to the Lord, and more from this period is Israelite history.

The activities encourage kids to carefully read and consider what God has to say. It encourages them to look for parallels between portions of these stories and other events in Israel’s history. It also helps them study the story Jotham told the people and consider the foolishness and possible motivations behind Jephthah’s rash vow. It also leads them to look at what Jesus had to say about making oaths to God. It includes activities such as memorizing key verses, completing a word search, summarizing what they have studied, and more.
