Three Books to Help Your Family Give Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Looking for a fresh new picture book that has to do with the theme of GRATITUDE?
Check out these three picture books that are sure to warm your heart! I’ve included a couple of discussion questions for each.
The Grumbles—A Story About Gratitude by Tricia Goyer and Amy Parker and illustrated by Monica De Rivas is a relatable tale that is sure to make you smile. Each member of the family is grumbling about something, but when Grandma comes along, she models how to see the positive in every situation. My favorite character was the baby who never actually learned not to cry like the others. It made me think of the fond memories I have from when I was a young mom.
Discuss:
What are several things that you often complain about?
How can you flip your grumbling into gratitude?
Family Feast by Carole Boston Weatherford depicts a family gathering with loads of food and fun! I loved the refrain which repeats throughout the book, “Tastes like home when family meet; a bond so warm, so strong, so sweet.” The artwork in this picture book is by Frank Morrison and it is beautiful.
Discuss:
What is your favorite thing about Thanksgiving?
What are you thankful for this year?
The Crayons Give Thanks by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers is a cute little book in which each crayon tells what they are thankful for. For example, “Blue” is thankful for “blueberries” and Yellow and Orange are thankful for “safety vests.” In the end, all the colors are thankful for each other.
Discuss:
Make a “thankful rainbow list” by coming up with something that you are thankful for for each color of the rainbow. Share your ideas with each other.
Example: purple–grapes, my favorite purple sweater, my bedroom that is purple…
Do:
Memorize a “gratitude” verse like James 1:17. Try writing each word of the verse on a different 3 X 5 card. Spread them out on a table and say the verse aloud together multiple times. With each repetition, remove one or two words until you are reciting the entire verse from memory.
James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows.”
