I was thrilled to learn about Nancy I. Sanders’ latest book of devotions, Out of this World. This jam-packed book of information about the planets, stars, and solar systems and more is perfectly named. Even the illustrations are out of this world! It is a beautiful book that needs to stay on the coffee table long after the child finishes reading it – even better if the family shares it together for family devotions. This would also be a great resource for homeschool families.

Did you know that Mercury has only one day while on Earth we have 176 days? Now that’s one long day! During its long time of daylight it gets up to 800°F, and at night it gets as cold as -280°F. Because is so close to the sun it only takes 88 Earth days for Mercury to make one orbit. That means it has a short year compared to ours. I got to thinking about these numbers of days and realized that only one day on Mercury lasts more than two Mercury years. No wonder the temperatures are so extreme.

In addition to these amazing facts about outer space, Nancy I. Sanders ties them in with great devotional insights. Here is just a part of one of them: “Unlike the extreme temperature changes Mercury experiences every day, God never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.” And there is more. Each devotional includes several ideas to get the child thinking about God and places for them to think things through and write about them. Each devotion includes engaging questions for children to apply the Scripture lessons to their own lives. It also challenges them with ways they can reflect Christ Jesus around their friends. There are also additional activities at the end of the book that correspond with the devotions.

Nancy includes fascinating devotionals about the sun and moon and each of the planets. And there are devotionals about comets, constellations, our Milky Way Galaxy, other galaxies. nebulas and black holes. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the amazing world of outer space created by our great and awesome God.
