The story of Samuel shows teens, and all of us, what God can do with a life dedicated to listening to God and obeying Him. Over the next few months, we’re going to be taking a closer look at Samuel’s story and helping the preteens and teens in our lives see what God might say to them through Samuel’s story. Let’s get started!

Before we even meet Samuel, we find we can learn much from his parents, especially his mother. Hannah’s devotion to God stands in sharp contrast to much of what was happening in the Book of Judges and follows the story of Ruth, another woman passionately dedicated to God. The resource continues through Samuel’s birth and dedication to the Lord, shows us the wickedness of Eli’s sons, and looks at God’s calling of Samuel. It concludes with a look at the defeat of the Israelites by the hand of the Philistines and the loss of the ark of the covenant.

This resource leads preteens and teens through the the first four chapters of I Samuel with activities that encourage them to carefully read and consider what God has to say. It encourages them to take a look at Hannah’s song and other songs in the Bible, leads them to learn more about Shiloh in Israel’s history, and challenges them to look for tendencies they may have to trust their own wisdom rather than God’s. It includes activities such as memorizing key verses, solving a word puzzle, summarizing what they have studied, and more.
