“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
This bright new picture book by Amy Parker assures kids that whatever vocation they think they might like to try, God is able to help them make a good choice—because he’s had plans for them since before they were born!
I’m always glad to see multiethnic characters in children’s books, and the illustrations in this book include a variety of races. They also show female characters as doctors, scientists, pilots, and carpenters as well as the more traditional nurse and ballerina.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'” (Jeremiah 29:11) forms the theme of the book, and children are encouraged to turn to God and the Bible as they grow and seek what God has in mind for them to do.
Readers are also reminded that their talents and interests come from God and are to be used by him and for him.
It’s a good message, even if it stops short of pointing to our ultimate purpose—to love, honor, and obey the Lord. Adults reading the book to children can easily steer the conversation to include this concept as well.
All in all, a worthwhile book to add to any child’s collection!
