Bible Verse Word Puzzles, Vol. 16: 1 Peter-2 John
As I was preparing these activities to share with you tonight, one of the verses kept standing out to me. 2 Peter 1:16-18 says, “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.”
The world will not waste any opportunity to tell the children we care about that the Bible is full of fairy tales and contradictions. Are they prepared to withstand these attacks? Understanding and believing that the Bible is the only authentic and authoritative Word of God is a critical component of their walk with God. There are many great resources out there to help your kids examine what they hear and help them understand not just what they believe but why they can be confident in what they believe.
The age of your children will obviously make a huge difference in what resources are the most helpful, but here are some of the resources I have found helpful over the years. And if a resource is too advanced for your children, it may be something you can read and then relay to them in ways they can understand. Let me know what other resources you have found to be helpful in the comments!
Creation Ministries International, Answers in Genesis, and Kids Answers are great resources for answering Creation vs. evolution questions.
Apologetics Press has a vast collection of articles and videos on a huge assortment of topics including the inerrancy and authority of God’s Word, why we can trust our modern copies of the Scripture, and more.
Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason: Refuting Alleged Bible Contradictions by Jason Lisle is an amazing book that examines hundreds of alleged contradictions in Scripture and explains why, using the tools of logic, each falls short of proving the Bible wrong.
Philosophy Adventure™ by Homeschool Adventure is a Biblically-based course on the history of ideas and how to evaluate them in light of God’s Word. (They also have a great Scripture memorization program for Philippians, too!)
Memorizing is more fun and effective if you can combine it with other exercises. This week, we’re looking at 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, and 2 John. We’ve combined memorization with crossword puzzles, handwriting practice, math puzzles, a word search, and more. All quotations are from the King James Version of Scripture. The following verses are included:
“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.” 2 Peter 1:16-18
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:8-10
“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it . . . Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 1:6, 9
