THANK YOU, OMU! by Oge Mora and Five Ways Your Family Can Serve Others at Thanksgiving
Have you ever given until you have nothing left? That is what happens to the main character of Thank you, Omu! written and illustrated by Oge Mora. This beautiful picture book is a Caldecott winner that was published by Little Brown Books for Young Readers in 2018. In the story, a generous woman has prepared a mouth-watering, tasty stew. One by one, different community members stop by her house to sample the stew.
Each time she shares with the person at her door. However, when it is finally time to sit down to eat, her pot is empty. Just in time, all of the thankful community members knock at the door bringing food to share with her and they all enjoy a delicious meal together. It is a wonderful book to help demonstrate the lessons of generosity, sharing, gratitude, and community.
After you read it, use the discussion questions below to connect with your family. Allow the heart of this book to springboard you into serving others and being generous this Thanksgiving. I have thought of a few ways that your family can serve others. I would love to hear other ideas that you have in the comments!
Discuss:
- What did the woman share with all of the people that came to her door?
- How do you think the people felt when the woman shared ?
- Do you think it was hard or easy for her to share? Why?
- How do you think she felt when her pot was empty?
- Do you think the people were thankful? Why or why not?
- Why is the scene at the end of the book so happy?
- What is something you could share? Who could you share it with?
Action Ideas: Here are five great ways to serve others with your family this Thanksgiving season.
- Invite a guest to your Thanksgiving dinner.
- Call or make a card for a far-away relative or friend.
- Donate the items for a turkey dinner to a family in need.
- Volunteer at a food pantry, food bank, or homeless shelter.
