The Flag and the Farm

As my first blog post with Christian Childen’s Book Authors, I’ll be sharing reviews of two kids’ books appropriate for summer reading.

With America’s 250th birthday fast approaching, Hannah Hall’s God Bless Our Country, published in 2016 by Thomas Nelson and illustrated by Steve Whitlow, reminds us all of the blessings we sometimes take for granted. In this book the author acknowledges many of those blessings and gives credit where credit is due.
“Tonight, we’ll snooze beneath the sky.
We’ve got the biggest view.
These summer nights make star-filled sights.
Just look what God can do!“
Yes, “Just look what God can do!”
When I interviewed Hannah C. Hall a few years ago, I learned she is a prayerful author, and her prayerful spirit echoes throughout her book.
Children will love seeing an array of God’s creatures as they focus on the blessings of the summer season. A squirrel, a raccoon, a beaver, and a bear cheer because their country makes them proud. The animals work side by side as they picnic together and appreciate their blessings.
An old eagle proudly raises the American flag while young eaglets fold their hands in prayer and thank God for their freedom. These critters model wonderful lessons for today’s children. I believe we should all follow their examples!
This is a charming board book and would make a great gift for helping a child celebrate July 4. I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!
I’d also like to encourage readers to check out Roscoe, The Bossy Rooster written by Becky Thomas and published in 2022 by Peaches Place Publishing. I met this author at the spring conference for Midsouth Christian Writers, and her enthusiasm for roosters cannot be missed. Her book is a delightful tool for teaching the Golden Rule. Matthew 7:12 tells us, “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”

I’ve never had much of an up-close-and-personal relationship with a rooster, but I did observe one from afar on my grandparents’ farm when I was a child. Roscoe appears to be an archetype!
Like the roosters on my grandparents’ farm, Roscoe thinks he should call all the shots. When his barnyard friends tell him he is not being kind to others, he finds himself alone and wondering why no one wants to play with him. Author Becky Thomas does a great job of using simple characters and a simple storyline to help kids learn the important lesson of the Golden Rule. Even though Roscoe is quite the colorful character, he learns his lesson; and readers will learn to love him! I’m also giving this book a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐review!
This summer may you be thankful for the freedom our flag represents, and may you always remember the Golden Rule!
