More Than Dress-Up: Discovering Who God Created Us to Be
One of my favorite things to watch is my four-year-old granddaughter disappear into her room and return wearing a very fancy princess dress.
She has an entire collection of princess dresses, complete with sparkly shoes. But what makes it even more special is when she wears them.
If her mom tells her she needs to go to her room and change her attitude, she almost always comes back wearing a different outfit. Somehow, slipping into a princess gown or something fancy transforms her outlook. She twirls into the room smiling, standing a little taller, imagining herself as someone brave, kind, beautiful, or adventurous.
Children have an incredible ability to step into a story. They don’t simply wear costumes—they become the character.
That beautiful truth is what makes Closet Full of Dreams by Cindy Saab such a delightful and meaningful book.
A Closet Full of Dreams
Closet Full of Dreams is a heartwarming story that encourages young readers (my granddaughter included) to dream beyond what they see in the mirror and discover the unique person God created them to be. As children journey through its pages, they’re reminded that their identity isn’t limited by circumstances, opinions, or expectations. Instead, God has filled each of them with purpose, creativity, gifts, and endless possibilities.
Christian children’s books like this do far more than entertain—they help shape hearts.
As Christian children’s authors, we have the incredible privilege of planting seeds that help children understand who they are in Christ. Every story that points a child toward God’s truth becomes another opportunity for the Holy Spirit to grow confidence, faith, and purpose in their lives.
Watching my granddaughter reminds me that changing clothes can temporarily change how we feel. A princess dress may inspire confidence for an afternoon. A firefighter’s helmet may spark courage. A doctor’s coat may awaken compassion.
But there is an even greater transformation available to every child.
Finding Our Identity
In the book, The Little Pot, children discover that they were created to be vessels in the Potter’s hands. What we hold is sometimes taken from us. Or in the case of The Tea Pot story, it is what eventually pours out. When we are filled with God’s love, His joy, His peace, His patience, His kindness, His goodness, His faithfulness, His gentleness, and His self-control, we become fruit-bearing vessels that reflect the heart of our Creator.
Our daily outfits don’t last long, just as the items the Potter places inside Little Pot are temporary assignments. The little girl in Saab’s book understands that as she chooses an outfit for the day and repeats the phrase, “Who shall I be? I want to be me. I want to be all that I can be. Oh, the possibilities!”
We belong to Him.
He has lovingly formed us, filled us with purpose, and called us His own. Our true identity isn’t found in the costume we wear, the opinions others have of us, or even the roles we play throughout life. Our identity is found in the Potter who created us.
So the next time you see a child dressing up, remember this beautiful truth: every outfit may change us for a little while, but only God transforms the heart forever. Or as Saab’s book states. “It’s fun to be all that God created me to be!”
