Sweet Truths: What Strawberries Can Teach Through Christian Children’s Books
Have you gone strawberry picking this season? It is a favorite thing to do as we head into warmer weather. Those berries with their bright red color and sweetness seem to signal joy and abundance—it’s no wonder they find their way into children’s stories. But in Christian children’s books, strawberries can become more than a simple fruit. They can serve as gentle, meaningful symbols that point young hearts toward deeper truths. Let’s discover more, so your strawberry-picking can be a time of spiritual growth.
Children’s Books with Strawberries
Strawberries are a fun way to introduce children to the goodness of God. Just as a ripe strawberry is sweet and satisfying, God’s love is rich, generous, and meant to be enjoyed. One of my favorite children’s books is The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Hungry Bear by Audrey and Don Wood. In this story, a little mouse picks a strawberry and follows the reader’s advice on how to keep it from the big, hungry bear.
Another great character in children’s books is Strawberry Shortcake. She was created by American Greetings in 1972 and became a television show and doll in the 1980s. Known for her strawberry-scented hair and positive attitude, she and her friends live in Strawberryland (or Big Apple City in recent versions) and promote the biblical principles of friendship, kindness, and optimism.
A great nonfiction children’s book about strawberries is My Incredible World: Picture Books for Children. This specific book in the series teaches children about strawberries.
Lastly, The Little Pot Rhyme and The Little Pot connect strawberries to the fruit of the Spirit. In this story, a little pot desires to become something amazing for the Potter. Each time it holds something, it creates an identity based on what the Potter has given it. Eventually, the Potter grows strawberries in the little pot and discovers it can be a fruit pot. There is also a curriculum available where Little Pot teaches a parallel between how a strawberry grows and how God can produce the fruit of the Spirit through us.
Bearing Fruit: Strawberries and Love
Strawberries also offer a natural connection to the idea of bearing fruit in our lives. Just as a healthy plant produces good fruit, children can learn that their actions are outward expressions of what God is doing inside them. A strawberry is often a symbol for love, and ironically, love is the basis of the fruit of the Spirit. You can read more about the symbolism of strawberries here.
Moments of Connection
There’s something deeply relational about gathering strawberries—whether it’s with family, friends, or neighbors. Christian children’s books can use these moments to highlight community, gratitude, and togetherness.
A simple story of a family making strawberry jam or sharing a basket with a neighbor can reflect the heart of serving others. These narratives help children see that faith isn’t just personal—it’s meant to be lived out in relationship.
Ultimately, strawberries point back to God. Their design, their sweetness, their ability to grow and multiply—all of it reflects intentional beauty.
When children read stories that draw attention to these small wonders, they begin to develop a sense of awe. They start to recognize that even the smallest details in creation can reveal something about God’s character.
From Seed to Story
For Christian children’s authors, strawberries offer a tender and relatable way to weave faith into storytelling. They ground spiritual truths in something tangible, something children can see, taste, and experience.
And perhaps that’s the beauty of it—truth doesn’t always have to be loud or complex. Sometimes it’s found in the strawberry patch, in a small red fruit, in a moment of sweetness that lingers just long enough to point a child’s heart back to the One who made it all.
So whether you’re writing, reading, or simply sharing a story, don’t overlook the strawberry. It might just contain the seed that will grow the message of God’s goodness in your child.
