Our lives are flooded with choices. From the moment we wake up until we fall asleep at night, we are faced with an endless stream of choices to make. It is the same for all people in all places and all times. Our options may look different, but the responsibilities are real. Preteens and teenagers are aware of these responsibilities in new ways. Let’s help them consider the impact of our choices while we look at this next section of the life of Samuel.

This activity unit looks at I Samuel 5-10, which records the choices and consequences of many people. It begins with Samuel reminding the Israelites they had a choice of who to follow. Then the ark of God is taken by the Philistines, who are faced with many choices – where should the ark dwell and how will they respond to the clear demonstration of God’s power. Then the Israelites must choose who they will trust – God or a king. And finally, Saul faced a choice of how to respond to God’s calling. Throughout, God demonstrates His power, love, and faithfulness, but He leaves the response up to the people.

There is much to consider when making a choice, and it’s important that preteens and teens understand that their heart behind the choice they make is extremely important. This resource leads preteens and teens through these chapters with activities that encourage them to carefully read and consider what God has to say. It challenges them to look at what God has done in the past and consider how it should impact them today. It also includes activities such as memorizing key verses, solving a word puzzle, summarizing what they have studied, and more.
